idea of 'India'

the mystery behind survival of  India as a  nation has always puzzled the intellects all around the globe ,what is the common link which binds us together irrespective of numbers, diversified religious beliefs ,ancient caste based social structure which is yet to embrace the modern idea of equality and justice, regional and linguistic feeling that sometimes seem to overpower the nationalistic fancy ,Or nationhood in case of India is just cultivated  by the noble ideas of constitution , whose fragility can be felt now and then?Is India a nation by chance or nation by choice? Is India just a geographical expression which is yet to get it's identity as a nation?

Nation-state and nationhood  are western concepts ,which evolved as offshoots of industrial revolution and renaissance. the growth of economy, increase in the demand of goods, crusade for liberty i.e emergence of capitalist forces in Europe ,emancipation of people from serfdom  etc provided impetus for transition of Rome from city-states to various nation-states. on the contrary India has colonial history and even before advent of British Indian polity was never organised............

Historically  Indian has been a plural society  (even from ancient times) ,the name of this geographical expression can be found as Bharatavarsha (after the name of an ancient tribe Bharata)  or Aryavarta in ancient literatures but it symbolises only cultural integration of this vast land but hardly any political integration or unity is found in the history of India. It was the cultural integration of this land which provided ideological base to forefathers to envisage the idea of India.

Pluralism which is cultural heritage of India can become a huge spoiler against idea of India if political forces try to interfere with it's spirit. After the emergence of politics based on ethnicity, religion , region ,language  national interest is being undermined .The quintessence of federal polity and multiparty system is to provide access to every section of the society in policy decision ,but after the emergence of plethora of regional parties ,regional interest has overridden the national interest ,which is evident in some recent events. The decision of prime minister to abstain from CHOGM summit in recent past, large number of illegal migrants from Bangladesh in West bengol and  Assam  clearly manifest the dominance of regional interest over national interest.Appeasing the minority section in the pretext of secularism has been followed since the birth of  the nation itself. Its time to reinvent the idea of secularism relevant for India's culture.

If  political parties do not develop an ethical standard of politics and continue to practise Machiavellian politics then I too believe India will cease to exist as a nation..........................
